On May 25, 2025, Xabi Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid manager, the LaLiga club said, as the Spaniard returns to the Santiago Bernabeu, where he gave six seasons as a player and won several trophies. Alonso has signed a three-year contract until June 2028 and will replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Alonso served as a charge of Bayer Leverkusen and confirmed he is all set to leave the German club this month. The Spaniard assumed the charge of Leverkusen in October 2022 and rolled to lift ts first Bundesliga title, without losing a game. Under his guidance, the team won the German Cup and qualified for the Europa League final.
However, he signed a contract at Leverkusen until 2026. The club granted to terminate his deal at the end of the season. Alonso will play a role as a Real coach and will assume charge of Real ahead of the Club World Cup, which starts in the United States next month.
